Is Jesus Not Talking to You?

Do you ever feel that Jesus does not speak to you? I know I have.  Have you prayed for something for so long and Jesus is not answering you?  Why would Jesus not speak to us?  I believe there are three reasons that Jesus does not speak to us.

  • We do not pray
  • We do not read our Bible
  • We have sin in our life’s or we are playing with temptation

The Dilemma

First, why don’t we pray? We get busy with life, I know that is a big one for many people. We need to find time to talk with Jesus every day. It says in Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”  It says seek first the kingdom of God, so I believe we need to start each day talking with Jesus, something I need to work on.  Now, I now some of you are thinking to yourself, but I can pray to Jesus anytime I want to.  That’s true, but I think it is wise to talk to Jesus at some point at the beginning of every day.

Second, why don’t we read our Bible?  I believe again, we get to busy with our daily life.  As with talking to Jesus through prayer, we need to listen to Him by reading the Bible.  It says in Psalms 119:105, “Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.”‘  Let me ask you a question, if you get up in the middle of the night, don’t you have night lights in  the hallway or in another room?  I hope so because if you don’t have them you would be tripping over anything and everything in the hallway.  It’s just like in out own life, if we don’t read the Bible, our light for our life is not going to be very bright.  Its also says in Matthew 4:4, “But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.””  Jesus knows we need food to survive, but we also need the sustenance the Bible provides.  If you don’t have enough to eat or eat the wrong kind of foods your body will suffer.  When we don’t read our Bible and study it, our spiritual life will begin to suffer.

Third, we have sin in our lives.  Don’t get me wrong, we will fall once in awhile but you need to get back up, confess it and move on with your life.  If you have sin in your life and don’t confess it, that’s like living your life in a prison.  Only you can want out of that prison, no one else can do it for you.  Then you can play with temptation.  What do I mean by saying you can play with temptation?  What I mean is the devil comes to tempt you and you don’t deal with it right then and there by asking Jesus to remove the temptation.  Like it says in James 4:7, “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”  If you resist the devil by praying to Jesus for deliverance, the devil will flee from you.

These are three things I believe that will keep us from hearing Jesus’ voice.  How can we expect a holy, loving, merciful and gracious God to talk to us if we don’t pray?  We don’t read our Bible or we have sin in our lives or are playing with temptation.

How to Change

We begin the process of change right where we are Jesus will meet us where we are in life and help us.  You need to pray to Jesus to help you with these areas in your life.  If you are ready to change, Jesus will help you.  Just start praying 5 minutes a day to Jesus, you may do it right after you get up or you may do it while you are driving to work.  To start reading your Bible, there is a great app for that, its called Youversion.  Just go to and make an account.  There you can save your favorite Bible verses and join other people reading the Bible.  One of my favorite features is the plans feature which includes hundreds of reading plans for almost every aspect of life.

How to change about having sin in your life, you need to talk to Jesus about that one.  You have to ask Jesus’ forgiveness for your sin and He will forgive it and never remember your sin any more.  You may be thinking, but Todd you don’t know what I have done.  It doesn’t matter what you have done, Jesus will forgive you.

This post was written for the Christian that can’t hear Jesus in his or her life.  But I want to give a non-Christian a chance to repent and turn his or her life back to Jesus.  We all have fallen away from God, we only have one hope to return to Him.  That hope is found in Jesus.  To know more about salvation read my post entitled Will their be Guest Parking in Heaven or read the Salvation page to get more information.

  1. Absolutely agree! I do believe that Jesus can and WILL meet us exactly where we are in our lives. I know I get stuck in the trap of being ‘not good enough’ or feeling like I have to fix something before I can feel ‘worthy’ enough to come to God in prayer. But it’s simply NOT true. Thanks for the reminder.

Also, Yes, people get busy. And when people get busy, reading your Bible and prayer can get put on the ‘back burner.’ I’ve been there. A few things that have helped: 1) I went through a phase where I refused to eat before I had read my Bible…that helped me get into a routine in the morning. 2)When life gets busy with kids, sometimes I intentionally lock myself in the bathroom to get 5 minutes away from the constant questions and ‘I wants’. I keep a Bible in there and even if I only have time to read one Psalm – it’s better than reading nothing at all!

Thanks for always being so encouraging!

    1. Thank you Kayla, you are so true when you said reading your Bible can get placed on the back burner if life gets to busy.
